Firecracker Penstemon is a perennial native to the southwestern United States. Known for its vibrant red flowers, it’s a great choice for attracting pollinators. Here are the ideal growing conditions for this plant:

1. Sunlight

  • Prefers full sun but can tolerate partial shade. For best blooming, plant in a location that receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day.

2. Soil

  • Grows well in well-drained soil, particularly sandy, gravelly, or rocky soils. It can tolerate poor soil conditions but does not thrive in waterlogged or clay-heavy soils.

3. Watering

  • Drought-tolerant once established. Water regularly during the first growing season to establish roots. Afterward, it needs minimal watering and can survive on natural rainfall in most regions. Overwatering can lead to root rot.

4. Temperature

  • Thrives in warm to hot climates but is hardy in colder temperatures. It can tolerate temperatures as low as -10°F (-23°C). Firecracker Penstemon is best suited for USDA hardiness zones 4-9.

5. Wildlife Attractor

  • The bright red tubular flowers are particularly attractive to hummingbirds and other pollinators like bees and butterflies.

6. Blooming

  • Produces showy red flowers from late spring through summer, sometimes with a secondary bloom in the fall. It's known for adding a splash of color to desert and arid landscapes.
